General manager Lou Lamoriello accepts responsibility for the New York Islanders’ recent struggles, and went further to say that he will attempt to improve his team ahead of the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline on March 3.

“There’s no excuses. Because it’s on me, totally on me. “That’s my responsibility to make us the best we possibly can, to make whatever changes we can. That’s not on the coaching staff, that’s not on the players, and I take that responsibility. It’s making it happen. There’s a lot of reasons why sometimes you can and you can’t, and those are decisions you have to make. But I take full responsibility for whatever changes are or are not made.”

Lamoriello said before their sixth straight loss Wednesday

Fans are most used to the latter since Lamoriello, who was rumoured to be looking at adding free agents Johnny Gaudreau and Nazem Kadri this summer, did not make any major moves ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Now that the Islanders sit six points back to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who currently hold the last Wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with 57 points.

“I think that if we can make ourselves better, whether it had been yesterday or the day before or today or tomorrow, we will definitely do that,” Lamoriello added, per NHL.com.

“You have to make sure that whatever you add is not subtracting. I think if you look throughout the National Hockey League you see the exact same thing.”

With precious points slipping away in the run for the playoff, Lamoriello is aware he will need to be busy until the trade deadline runs through. And the GM is feeling the urgency.

“I think there’s always an urgency,” Lamoriello said. “That shouldn’t change. I think I go back to if you can make your team better, you make it better, whether you’re going good or you’re not going good. You have to make it better with what you have available to do and also what your partner, that is the trading partner, wants to make it happen.”

The Islanders could sure use a boost upfront and could look at top trade baits in Vancouver Canucks’ Bo Horvat, Chicago Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane, St. Louis Blues' Vladimir Tarasenko or San Jose Sharks’ Timo Meier. Lamoriello is also said to be keeping an eye on improving his blue line, and has been linked to Arizona Coyotes’ Jakob Chychrun.

Lamoriello however refuses to blame his decisions of the offseason on his team’s current struggles. He sincerely believes he did right by the team in the summer.

“At that given time, if you could have made the team better, you do that. Have I lost the trust and belief in the team? Absolutely not. I still believe the way I did in the beginning of the summer.”

Now fans hope Lou will be way more active ahead of the trade deadline, then he was in July…
