The 83 year old just can't stay away.
Early reports of Lou Lamoriello's retirement are premature.
Lamoriello, of course, was dismissed as the New York Islanders' general manager this past offseason, ending his 38 season long streak of being an NHL GM. Lamoriello had been the Islanders' GM since 2015 and was officially dismissed in April once the team failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
At that point we all figured that Lamoriello was finally retired.
Think again.
Today NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported that Lamoriello is actually not retired and is in fact still employed by the Islanders, acting as an advisor to Islanders owner Scott Malkin.
“It’s totally different and unique,” Lamoriello, 83, told The Athletic on Monday morning. “There are more nights you sleep much better.”
As far as the day to day, Lamoriello still watches as much hockey as ever but admits that his time as a day to day hockey man are over.
“I’m just enjoying the blossoming of some of these young players that are coming into the league or have been in the league a year or two,” he said. “But the days of being in day to day for the hockey team, I’m retired from that part of the game, I believe it’s time.”
Time comes for everyone.
Lamoriello was a fantastic, revolutionary GM in his prime but his style of managing a team is fairly ineffective in 2025. Hell... it was ineffective in 2015, but I digress...
