It’s been a good summer for the Chicago Blackhawks who, not only won the Connor Bedard sweepstakes at the NHL Draft, but also make significant changes to upgrade their roster for the upcoming season. Amidst the changes came the trade of defenseman Caleb Jones, who was not offered a new contract in Chicago. He ended up signing a one-year deal worth $775,000 as a free agent with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The move was made by GM Kyle Davidson and the Blackhawks, who unfortunately did not have the courtesy of telling Caleb’s older brother and teammate, Seth Jones, of their decision. You could tell the older defenseman would have appreciated a call, a headsup.
When speaking with team insider Ben Pope, Seth Jones couldn’t help but express his feelings on how that situation was handled.
“[We] had some good chemistry last year, and Chicago just wanted to go a different way… After the fact, Kyle called me, but not before. But I’m trying to control what I can control.”
It’s probably not the best strategy on the Hawks’ part to disrespect and dismiss the feelings of their veteran blue liner, who is a huge chunk of the new core of this rebuilding team. He is signed for another seven years at a salary of $9.5 million AAV, along with a no-trade clause to top it off.
It could be interesting to see if this bad call on the Hawks’ part will play against them at some point when it’s time for Seth Jones to decide where to go next…
