MacEwen & Geertsen drop the gloves for heavyweight showdown at center ice.
Two big boys put on a show for the fans.
Fans who tuned in to the Sunday night matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and and the New Jersey Devils were treated to a pretty solid bout during the game's second period.
It was 25 year old forward Zack MacEwen who represented the Flyers in this one while 26 year old defenseman Mason Geertsen represented the Devils, and both men came into this one at well over 200 lbs. There was no pretense for this one, just two big men having a chat before the faceoff at center ice and deciding that they both wanted a piece of one another.
In the early moments of this one it looked like we were gonna get an entirely one sided affair, as it was all MacEwen in the early going. MacEwen landed a big blow to open the exchange and that immediately caused Geertsen to back off and rethink his approach. Even though Geertsen took some extra time to readjust, it was once again all MacEwen when they came together with the Flyers forward peppering him with both the right and the left.
It wasn't until the very end of this one that Geertsen finally seemed to wake up from his slumber and started to throw some heavy right hands, many of which connected on MacEwen. It was too little too late however as by that point the National Hockey League officials on the ice were already closing in to put a stop to fight.
I have to give the clear edge to MacEwen on this one. Not only did it appear as though he delivered more punishment during the fight itself but he also did significantly more damage to his opponent, at least visually. After the two men seperated and headed to the penalty box, the damage that had been inflicted by MacEwen's punches could be seen all over Geertsen's face.
His nose however took the worst of it, with a sizeable gash at the very top of the bridge of his nose. Geertsen did have his helmet on during the exchange, so it may very well be that the cut was caused by his own visor.
