When the dominoes start falling..
Moments after insiders talked about defenseman Colton Parayko was about to get traded by the St. Louis Blues to the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday, another blue liner was on the move.
According to insider Elliotte Friedman, the Calgary Flames and Utah Mammoth were closing in on a MacKenzie Weegar deal that awaits his approval.
Frank Seravalli later reported that Olli Maatta is part of the deal going from Utah to Calgary in this transaction.
It was however noted from the start that Weegar needed to accept to waive his clause for the deal to go into motion. Finally later on Wednesday night, he did and this is the trade package involved for Utah to acquire Weegar:
Olli Maatta
Jonathan Castagna
Three 2026 second-round picks.
The Flames acquired Weegar from the Florida Panthers in July 2022 as part of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. They signed him to an eight year extension with a $6.25 million cap hit before he had played a single game for them. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2030-31 campaign.
Weegar, 32, has three goals and 20 points in 60 games with the Flames this season while averaging 23:07 of ice time.
