Yeesh... this looked ugly. Head first right into the boards for Pettersson.
UPDATE 2: Elias Pettersson... the defenseman, not the forward... has repaid the favor.
The 21 year old defender absolutely buried Conor Zary just moments after MacKenzie Weegar pulled the same act on Elias Pettersson... the forward.
UPDATE: Pettersson has returned to action.
All the talk coming into this season surrounding Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson was about how much muscle he put on during his offseason training.
Well... maybe he should have went even harder on his summer bulk.
Pettersson got absolutely DROPPED by Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar this evening in a play that appeared very, very, dangerous at first blush.
Weegar appeared to drill Pettersson from behind, head first into the boards. He was called immediately for a five minute Major penalty, but upon review the infraction was reduced to just a two minute minor for boarding.
If you watch closely you'll see Weegar get Pettersson shoulder to shoulder, rather than on the numbers as it first appeared.

Pettersson has left the game. Stay tuned for updates on his status.
