And the news does not get any better from here...
The San Jose Sharks were riding high heading into Monday's matchup against the Dallas Stars. Their young captain, Macklin Celebrini, had tallied five assists in two games to open the 2026-27 season, and the club was coming off consecutive overtime victories. But the mood shifted abruptly just moments before the opening faceoff.
Celebrini completed his full pregame warm-up in his usual spot on the Sharks' top line. Everything appeared normal. Shortly before puck drop, the team announced he had been ruled out with a lower-body injury.
The timing raised immediate questions. No one saw an obvious incident during warmups, and the Sharks offered virtually no details about what happened.
After the game, head coach Ryan Warsofsky provided little clarity, saying Celebrini was "still being evaluated" and declining to comment on the injury's severity. The Sharks scheduled a practice for noon CT on Tuesday, which could offer the next opportunity for an update.
With their franchise centrepiece suddenly unavailable, San Jose scrambled to adjust. Ty Dellandrea slotted in as the 12th forward, while Alexander Wennberg was bumped up to fill Celebrini's spot on the first line. The Stars took advantage of the young superstar’s absence and easily won the match 5-0.
Celebrini has been the engine driving everything in San Jose since being selected first overall in the 2024 draft. Over parts of three NHL seasons, the North Vancouver native has accumulated 70 goals and 183 points in 154 games. His sophomore campaign was nothing short of spectacular, as he piled up 45 goals and 115 points across a full 82-game schedule, earning a spot on Team Canada's roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, where he contributed five goals and 10 points in six contests.
Named captain earlier before the start of the season, Celebrini is in the final year of his entry-level deal before a five-year extension worth $18.8 million per season kicks in next summer.
The Sharks and their fans are left waiting for answers on exactly what sidelined their captain between warmups and the opening whistle, and how long he might be out.
