Being named the captain of your home country before a major international tournament is an honor to be proud of, but as National Hockey League superstar Macklin Celebrini learned this week it is an honor that also comes with a great deal of responsibilities.

Celebrini has continued to wear the "C" for his home country of Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championship of Hockey despite the fact that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was added to the roster, and it has proven to be a valuable learning experience for the young hockey phenom.

In a moment that has now gone viral on social media, Celebrini forgot his captain duties prior to the game which at an international tournament would have seen him introduce himself to the officials overseeing the game, and of course shaking each of their hands. Celebrini is understandably unaccustomed to this tradition and with his focus on the game ahead it seems to have slipped his mind.

Celebrini however quickly showed the kind of character that likely led to him being named captain in the first place when he went out of his way to issue a very public apology. Despite knowing full well that he would be on camera, Celebrini skated over to the officials and issued what sounded very much like a heartfelt apology to the officials on the ice.

It was a great show of class from Celebrini and one that I am happy to report that the officials reciprocated by graciously accepting Celebrini's apology and letting him know that no real harm had been done.

You can see the moment in which Celebrini apologized in the short clip below:
