Macklin Celebrini impresses Sharks GM with surprising contract decision

The San Jose Sharks locked in their franchise cornerstone on a deal that will shape the organization for years to come. Macklin Celebrini has officially agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $94 million, carrying an annual cap hit of $18.8 million earlier this week. But it wasn't just the numbers that made headlines. It was how the young star handled the entire process.

Celebrini has been nothing short of spectacular since arriving in San Jose. After posting 63 points in 70 games during his rookie campaign, the forward took a massive leap in his sophomore season. In 2025-2026, he erupted for 115 points, including 45 goals, across a full 82-game schedule. Through just 152 career NHL games, he has already accumulated 178 points, placing him among the most dangerous offensive talents in the league.

Sharks general manager Mike Grier spoke openly to Sportsnet about what struck him most during the negotiation process. According to Grier, Celebrini could have rightfully demanded the maximum salary allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. Instead, the young center deliberately chose to leave his team with financial flexibility moving forward.

“I’m very grateful’ said Grier on Celebrini not seeking a maximum deal.

Grier described himself as deeply moved by that decision, pointing to a level of maturity that is remarkably rare for a player so early in his career. In his view, Celebrini's willingness to leave money on the table reflects a genuine commitment to the franchise and the city of San Jose, as well as a desire to build a championship contender around him.

“That meant a lot to me,” Grier said. “He showed his faith and his commitment to the organization, and him wanting to be here and be successful here. It was pretty important and pretty cool for me to hear that from such a young player having that maturity.”

The deal positions San Jose to remain competitive in the trade and free agent markets while building around one of hockey's brightest young stars. With cap space preserved thanks to Celebrini's selfless approach, Grier now has room to surround his franchise player with the supporting cast needed to push for a Stanley Cup.

The Sharks now have their centerpiece secured at a price that, despite its massive total, could end up looking like a bargain given the trajectory Celebrini is on.
