The ongoing saga between Connor Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets could take another interesting turn this weekend, with a new report suggesting the two sides may have an agreement in place to delay a decision on the star goaltender's future until after the NHL's Heritage Classic.

TSN insider Darren Dreger provided the latest update Thursday, suggesting Hellebuyck and the Jets could be prepared to put their ongoing situation on hold temporarily as Winnipeg prepares for its outdoor showdown. While the goaltender's team-imposed suspension is reportedly set to expire this Friday, that doesn't necessarily mean fans should expect him to immediately return to the ice with his teammates.

According to Dreger, there could be an understanding between the two sides that allows them to avoid a potentially distracting situation ahead of one of the biggest events on Winnipeg's schedule.

"There’s a sense there could be an agreement between the Jets and Hellebuyck to delay his physical until a later date out of respect to the Heritage classic. This weekend is about the game. Meanwhile, the focus to trade the star goalie remains."

That report is particularly interesting because it suggests the Jets' efforts to move Hellebuyck may continue behind the scenes even as the organization attempts to keep the spotlight on the Heritage Classic.

Last week, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Hellebuyck's team-imposed suspension was scheduled to expire this Friday, technically opening the door for the veteran netminder to rejoin Winnipeg in time for this weekend's outdoor game. However, a return isn't necessarily as simple as showing up at the rink. The team would still need to address the circumstances surrounding his absence, including the physical evaluation referenced by Dreger.

If the two sides have agreed to delay that process, it could provide both Hellebuyck and the Jets with some breathing room while allowing the Heritage Classic to proceed without the ongoing dispute dominating the headlines.

The timing would make sense for Winnipeg, particularly given the attention surrounding Hellebuyck's situation. The Heritage Classic is an opportunity for the Jets to showcase their team and the city to a national audience. Having questions about whether their franchise goaltender will return, remain away from the team or be traded overshadowing the event is hardly an ideal scenario.

At the same time, Dreger's report makes it clear that delaying the physical would not necessarily signal a breakthrough in the relationship. In fact, the most important part of his update may be the reminder that the focus on trading Hellebuyck remains unchanged.

The Jets are still attempting to find a solution that works for the organization, while Hellebuyck's desire to move on continues to complicate matters. Winnipeg cannot simply trade the three-time Vezina Trophy winner to whichever team makes the highest offer, either. His contractual trade protection gives him significant influence over where he could end up, limiting the potential market and making negotiations more complicated.

For Hellebuyck, meanwhile, the uncertainty means he could remain on the sidelines even after his suspension expires. Although he could technically rejoin the organization Friday, that doesn't guarantee he will be back in the lineup for Sunday's Heritage Classic against the Montreal Canadiens.

Ultimately, Dreger's latest report suggests that the Jets and Hellebuyck may be willing to put their differences aside temporarily for the sake of the Heritage Classic. Whether that understanding buys Winnipeg enough time to complete a trade remains to be seen.

For now, fans should not interpret a possible delay as evidence that Hellebuyck is preparing to recommit to the Jets. The two sides may simply be trying to ensure that one of the NHL's marquee events isn't consumed by an increasingly complicated contract dispute.

The Heritage Classic could come and go without a resolution. But if Dreger's reporting is accurate, the underlying situation is unlikely to disappear with it.
