This morning Quebec Premier Francois Legault announced that Quebec's Highway 50 will be officially renamed "Guy Lafleur Highway" in honor of legendary Montreal Canadiens player Guy Lafleur, who passed away in 2022 after a battle with cancer.
The 160km highway, a main thoroughfare in the province, connects Gatineau, effectively a suburb of Ottawa, to Mirabel, a northern suburb of Montreal.
Members of Lafleur's family were present for the Premier's announcement in Lafleur's hometown of Thurso, Quebec. The Premier praised Lafleur as, "an accessible ma, a generous man, a humble man, down to Earth man who was proud to say he was born in Thurso."
"When I visit the offices of different premiers of the different provinces, it's remarkable," Legault said. "Guy Lafleur's jersey is in the office of each premier and they tell me, 'it's the nicest gift I've ever received in my life.'"
