Edmonton Oilers superstar captain Connor McDavid is going to be a married man before too long, as it was announced that he and his girlfriend Lauren Kyle were engaged.
And keeping in the spirit that was essentially a Canadian Royal Wedding in the late 1980s between Wayne Gretzky and Hollywood actress Janet Jones, McDavid and his fiancee have announced their official wedding date will be taking place in the summer of 2024.
Lauren made the announcement during a live Instagram Q+A session, in which she also included a story of how she and the Oilers captain first became acquainted with one another.
"We were set up by my cousin and his teammate!" she told a fan. "We went on a date eight years ago, and the rest is history," she penned.
After McDavid proposed last June, Kyle took to social media to release the following heartfelt statement:
"I cannot put into words how happy I am to be spending the rest of our lives together. Almost eight years of growth, happiness, and so much love, and I can't believe we have so much more to look forward to," she shared.
"I knew you were my person from the day we met, and I can't wait for the beautiful life we are going to create together," she continued. Expressing gratitude for the thoughtful proposal, Kyle concluded, "Thank you for the most thoughtful, picture-perfect proposal that I could never have imagined. I love you more than anything."
For those old enough to remember, the Gretzky wedding was just about as close as Canada has come to a royal wedding similar to that of the British Royal Family across the pond. Will the current Oilers captain be getting the same celebrity treatment as the former Oilers captain did?
