Jets making major changes.
There has a been a growing sense that there are major changes on the horizon for the Winnipeg Jets, and on Monday morning we got our first sign this will indeed be the case for this offseason for the Jets.
National Hockey League insider Frank Seravalli was the first to break the news, reporting that the Jets have fired interim head coach Dave Lowry and have also chosen to move on from both assistants Jamie Kompon and Charlie Huddy in what appears to be a major overhaul of their current coaching staff. The only person who appears to have been spared from the culling of the coaching staff is former National Hockey League goaltender Wade Flaherty, who has been a member of the Jets coaching staff in one role or another for over a decade now.
The move comes off the heels of surprising reports yesterday that suggest the Jets have extended general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff's contract for another 3 years, a move that was surprising if only due to the fact that the Jets largely failed to deliver on the expectations many had for them this season. It would appear that giving Cheveldayoff a 3 year mandate was the first step in what will be a significant overhaul of the organization, although how many changes we can expect on the horizon remains to be seen.
As for Dave Lowry I don't think there's a great deal to say. Lowry was put in a very tough position when long time Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice suddenly and unexpectedly resigned from his position with the Jets, and Lowry did what he could when called upon to step into a very difficult role. I imagine this is a particularly difficult situation given that his son, Adam Lowry, just signed a new deal with the Jets, but no doubt both Dave and Adam appreciated the challenges that could come if he took the job.
Lowry has previously worked as an assistant coach at the NHL level for the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings, and with his experience as both a player and a coach I'm sure he will find a new job in short order should he choose to do so.
