Major sign-and-trade heating up ahead of free agency!

The writing had been on the wall for a while in Buffalo. Even after the Sabres cleared cap room by moving Bowen Byram in a trade on Tuesday, the expectation was that pending unrestricted free agent Alex Tuch would not be returning. On Wednesday, general manager Jarmo Kekalainen made it official when speaking with local reporters.

But the real story is not just that Tuch is leaving. It is where he might end up, and how Buffalo plans to avoid walking away empty-handed.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Kekalainen acknowledged that "Alex Tuch will be missed" while confirming the organization is moving on from the talented winger. Kekalainen also indicated the team is actively pursuing a sign-and-trade arrangement to extract some return rather than simply losing Tuch for nothing on the open market.

Multiple sources reportedly point to the Washington Capitals as the frontrunner to land Tuch in such a deal.

Chad DeDominicis noted that the Sabres appear to be "well down that path" in terms of finalizing a sign-and-trade framework. That language suggests negotiations between Buffalo and at least one interested party have progressed beyond the exploratory stage.

Earlier in the week, Chris Johnston reported that despite the cap flexibility gained through the Byram deal, the early indication was that it would not alter the trajectory of discussions between the Sabres and Tuch's camp. The expectation at that point was that Tuch would simply test free agency.

The pivot toward a sign-and-trade changes the calculus significantly. Instead of watching a productive forward walk for nothing, Buffalo could receive draft picks, prospects, or roster players in return. For Washington, a sign-and-trade would guarantee them Tuch's services without having to compete in the open market frenzy that begins on July 1.

Tuch has been a key piece of the Sabres' lineup since arriving in the Jack Eichel trade, bringing physicality, scoring ability, and leadership to a franchise that has been searching for a path back to relevance. His departure marks another significant roster shift under Kekalainen's direction.

For now, all eyes turn to the specifics. The structure of any potential deal with Washington or any other interested contender, the contract terms Tuch would sign, and what assets flow back to Buffalo remain unclear. No matter where this potential sign and trade takes place, this could become one of the more notable transactions of the offseason in short order.
