With less than one week to go before the NHL’s annual Entry Draft, things are starting to heat up across the league.

One particularly persistent rumor gaining traction is that the New York Islanders are aggressively trying to acquire another top-10 first-round pick, aiming to select Long Island native James Hagens in addition to star defenseman Matthew Schaefer with the first overall pick.

To pull this off, newly appointed general manager Mathieu Darche will need to get creative, as top picks like these are rarely traded.

That said, the Boston Bruins have recently indicated that they may be open to moving their first-round pick, the 7th overall selection, in exchange for immediate roster help.

According to reporters James Murphy and Stefan Rosney of RG Media, the Bruins and Islanders are currently engaged in trade talks that could turn into something major ahead of the draft.

One source informed them: “That’s not a surprise, but considering where some people are saying [James] Hagens has fallen to, the Islanders and Bruins make a lot of sense there.”

“Based on what I’m hearing, their goal is to move up into the top five. But if they can’t do that, with the drop-off after the top five, they would like to use the seventh overall pick in a trade package that could get them a player for their lineup now,” an NHL source told RG last week.

In addition to Boston’s first-round pick, the names of blue liners Noah Dobson, Alexander Romanov, and forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau have also surfaced as potential pieces in the discussions.

“They would need one of their current top-six forwards or top-four defensemen in a package for that top pick,” the aforementioned source said.

However, if the Islanders are indeed willing to part with their star defenseman Dobson, it’s believed the return would have to be much more substantial than just Boston’s first-round selection.

We’ll see what happens, but there could be major movement on June 27.
