Trade rumours surrounding defenseman Rasmus Andersson only intensied in Calgary when Flames general manager Craig Conroy did not rule out a trade involving his blue liner on Thursday.

While the GM said he remains in communication with Andersson and all options are still on the table, there is a growing feeling that the defender could be on the move.

And according Nick Kypreos, there is a feeling that the Toronto Maple Leafs, who were once really going for Andersson, could look more seriously at acquiring him this offseason.

“ The Maple Leafs were interested in Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson at the trade deadline and could jump back in now.”

Former Flames GM Brad Treliving is now at the helm in Toronto, and it only makes sense that he would love to get his former player in a Maple Leafs’ uniform.

Andersson, who was drafted 53rd overall by the Flames in 2015, had 11 goals and 31 points in 81 games with the Flames last season while averaging 23:59 of ice time.

He is however entering the final season of a six-year, $27.3 million contract with an annual cap hit of $4.55 million. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025-26 campaign. Toronto has over $25 million in projected cap space, though there is pending free agent John Tavares to figure out while the Maple Leafs expect Mitch Marner to hit free agency on July 1st.

Later on Friday, the Maple Leafs finally announce an extension for Tavares, signing the veteran forward to a four-year contract extension, carrying a $4.38M AAV.

But there are also several pending RFAs aside from Matthew Knies, in Nick Robertson, Pontus Holmberg, and a couple of Toronto Marlies, like goaltending prospect Dennis Hildeby.

Let’s see where this rumour goes.
