Major trades to come as Wings face worse cap situation!
KeyStone Press

The upcoming summer will be a pain for the Detroit Red Wings, as it is setting up to be the worst yet for general manager Ken Holland. Even now, the cap situation is quite the puzzle as the team is right up against the salary cap upper limit with Johan Franzen and his $3.95 million cap hit already on long-term injured reserve.

Young forwards Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and Anthony Mantha are up for contract extensions,  and it will cost Detroit substantially... In addition to these key players, Petr Mrazek, Tyler Bertuzzi and Martin Frk will also need new deals.

Quality defenseman Mike Green is set to hit the trade block before the deadline, which will free up some space. If the Wings do not move him at the trade deadline, expect Detroit to let the veteran walk next offseason.

But he is not the only Wings player who could be moved. Gustav Nyquist and Jimmy Howard appear to be non-rental trade candidates.

These potential trades might be the only way for Detroit to respect the limit this summer. If not, they could maybe manage to place one or both of Niklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson on long-term injured reserve to save cap space...
