Giddy up, Oilers fans!

You'll have to excuse Edmonton Oilers fans if they're a little testy these days.

After all, they're nearing the conclusion of two long-term contracts for arguably the two best players on the planet. Connor McDavid is under contract for the next three seasons, while Leon Draisaitl is inked for just two more seasons. Both players will become unrestricted free agents at the end of their deals, assuming there are no contract extensions in place. The Oilers can begin negotiating a new deal with Draisaitl next offseason, while McDavid will have to wait an extra year.

There's been plenty of rumblings around Edmonton that if the Oilers can't break through in this next year or two that both Draisaitl and McDavid will leave for greener pastures. Rest easy though, Oilers fans. Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that Draisaitl won't be going anywhere, regardless of how things play out before the end of his contract.

From Friedman on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer:

"I think Draisaitl is going to stay...I'm saying that right now. I think Draisaitl is going to stay. If things stay the same, I don't think he'll go anywhere."

- Elliotte Friedman

Of course, money talks.

If the Oilers want to keep Draisaitl, they'll need to open up their wallet in order to get it done. I personally wouldn't be surprised if they make Draisaitl the highest paid player in the NHL... at least until they sign McDavid the following offseason.
