It sounds like the Philadelphia Flyers may have dodged a major scare.
Earlier this week the Flyers confirmed that Couturier had suffered an upper body injury, one that many feared could be related to the back injury that eventually forced him out of action prematurely just one season ago. The Flyers' 29 year old centerman missed the majority of last season due to the injury, appearing in only 29 games during the regular season and finishing the campaign with 6 goals and 11 assists for 17 points and a plus minus rating of -6 on the season.
Thankfully the latest on Couturier actually appears to be a bit of good news, although it has not as of yet been officially confirmed. The latest comes to us from TVA's Renaud Lavoie, who on Sunday reported that he has been hearing good things on the Couturier front.
From Lavoie:
Hearing some positives on Sean Couturier’s injury. He could be back in the next 3-4 weeks if everything is going according to plan. Back injuries are tricky, so let’s hope he won’t be out to long.
While Couturier being out for up to a month may not initially sound like positive news for the Flyers, when you consider that there were legitimate concerns about the potential of Couturier's season once again being cut short, this is in fact a very good sign.
Here's how NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported on the Couturier injury earlier this week during his most recent podcast.
"I was getting people telling me two different things," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "I had people telling me 'This guy's out for the year' and I had people telling me 'Don't say that because they don't know what the answer is.' They are trying to figure out exactly what the injury is. They are going for a second opinion and they are hopeful he is going to play... but there is real worry about it. There's no question there's real worry."
It sounds like things may be leaning the Flyers' way so far, at least as far as this injury is concerned, and hopefully for Sean Couturier that trend will continue and he can finally make a full recovery.
