Malkin wants to know why the officials are rooting for the Sharks

NHL players who have been eliminated from playoff contention rarely watch the Stanley Cup finals, however, Pittsburgh Penguins Evgeni Malkin might take a look now that the San Jose Sharks are two wins away from meeting with the Boston Bruins for the ultimate battle.

That’s because Malkin expected the Sharks to make it this far, but his prediction has been somewhat altered by outside help, and he’s noticed.

While performing at the World Championship for Russia, Malkin told KHL insider Igor Eronko that while he expected the Sharks to make it far into the postseason, he does not understand why they get so much help from the officials.

Of course his comments and questions stem from the latest controversy surrounding the Sharks. San Jose won Game 3 in overtime on an illegal play as Erik Karlsson tipped the puck it after it was touch by Timor Meier’s hand. Since the play cannot be reviewed, the Sharks won and chaos ensued…

Geno also knows the Sharks have been lucky more than once this postseason. They have now benefited from three controversial calls thus since the start of the playoffs. There was a questionable five-minute major against the Golden Knights in the first round, which was followed by a successful offside challenge that negated a  Avalanche goal in Round 2. Both took place in do or die Games 7.

I guess Geno knows no one will answer him on that tough question. He might look at tonight’s Game 4 to see if the referees are still playing for San Jose.
