Slovak fugitive wanted for 16 years arrested after hotel staff tip off police
What was supposed to be a trip to watch Olympic hockey turned into the end of a 16-year run from justice.
Italian police arrested a 44-year-old Slovak citizen on Wednesday in Milan after discovering he was wanted for more than a decade. The man had travelled to Italy to attend the Winter Olympic ice hockey matchup between Slovakia and Finland.
According to reports from ANSA, the man had been sentenced in 2010 by a court in Bolzano, northern Italy, to 11 months in prison for theft. Instead of serving his sentence, he disappeared, successfully evading authorities for 16 years.
But his luck finally ran out this week.
The fugitive checked into a hotel in Milan’s Baggio district ahead of the game. Alert hotel staff reportedly tipped off police, who were able to track him down when he attended the matchup.
Law enforcement authorities have since transferred him to San Vittore prison in Milan. He still has 11 months and seven days to serve, the local Carabinieri police force said.
Instead of cheering on Slovakia from the stands, his Olympic trip ended behind bars, bringing a long-running case to a close in the most unexpected of settings.
Plus, the guy missed one heck of a hockey game!
