Maple Leafs steal 2 players from a pair of rival teams in the East.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a pair of new players.
According to a breaking news report from National Hockey League insider Frank Seravalli, the Maple Leafs have added both Cayden Primeau and Sammy Blais to their roster on Monday. Both Primeau and Blais were claimed off of waivers by the Maple Leafs, with Primeau having been waived by the Carolina Hurricanes while Blais was waived by the Montreal Canadiens.
Taking a player from a bitter rival like the Montreal Canadiens is always going to feel good and doing so in the case of the Hurricanes, another Eastern Conference rival, isn't too bad either.
I do however have to address the elephant in the room here, and that is the one surrounding Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll. The fact that Primeau is being added today suggests to me that there are real concerns about when, or even if, Woll might be back with the team and we will have to wait and see how this all plays out given the sensitive nature of this issue.
Although Primeau was under contract with the Hurricanes, his last season was spent with the Canadiens American Hockey League affiliate, the Laval Rocket. In 26 games he had a 1.96 goals against average and a .927 save percentage, definitely showing some potential at the goaltending position. Primeau also has 55 games of NHL experience spread across several seasons, although his NHL number aren't nearly as good with a 3.69 career goals against average and a career save percentage of just .884.
Blais is coming off of a big season in the American Hockey League with the Abbotsford Canucks, one in which he helped that team capture the Calder Cup. In 51 regular season games Blais had 14 goals and 26 assists for a total of 40 points, and in 23 playoff games he had 6 goals and 13 assists for a very impressive 19 playoff points.
Both of these players have come at no cost for the Maple Leafs but they will have some roster decisions to make before finalizing their roster later today.
