Bad luck to start camp in Toronto.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are opening camp on Wednesday with unfortunate news from general manager Brad Treliving. With the players getting back into the groove of things ahead of the 2025-26 season, Treliving announced that forward Max Domi will not be a full participant to start training camp after tweaking something, listed as a lower-body injury. Domi is listed as day to day.
This could be a significant blow to Toronto especially if Domi is sidelined until the start of the campaign or more. The Maple Leafs need to replace Mitch Marner, and Domi’s name has come up as a potential candidate to play with Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies on the top line.
Domi, who is entering the second year of his four-year, $15 million deal, was recently called out by head coach Craig Berube who did not mince his words when expecting his player to shoot the puck more in order to deserve his spot on the top line.
“It’s not always about looking for (Matthews) and finding (Matthews). It’s about Max, him shooting pucks, scoring goals and being that type of player,” Berube said this offseason.
Domi struggled to score last season as he didn’t shoot that much, and the Maple Leafs’ coaching staff and fanbase are hoping for more when it comes to the gritty forward. Last season, Domi recorded eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 74 games, and the Leafs need more out of him.
However at this time, Domi is unavailable to show what he can do and help fill the void left by Marner’s departure.
