The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to lose one of their star forward this summer with Mitch Marner expected to test free agency, but it is now starting to sound like the Maple Leafs could actually be losing two of their star forwards this summer.

National Hockey League insider Pierre LeBrun recently commented on the ongoing contract negotiations between the Maple Leafs and former Maple Leafs captain John Tavares, with LeBrun balking at the suggestion that the contract recently signed by Dallas Stars forward Matt Duchene could be used as a point of comparison.

"I know for a fact that, unless there was a lot of term attached to it, there's no way Tavares signs for $5 million here with the Leafs," said LeBrun on TSN's Overdrive.

LeBrun claims that his sources informed him recently that Tavares was unwilling to come down that low.

"What I was told last week was that 5 was too low from the Tavares camp point of view," said LeBrun.

Following his comments on the radio last week, LeBrun would expand on his comments in a recent article for The Athletic where he revealed that the two sides were still far apart as of this weekend.

There’s still more than a week to go before July 1, but the Leafs and John Tavares’ camp, led by agent Brisson, still haven’t found their sweet spot on an extension. Wherever each side is, it wasn’t close enough as of Saturday.

That would appear to be in line with reports from other NHL insiders including David Pagnotta, who reported last week that the Maple Leafs had come in very low with their offer to Tavares.

While we are still 10 days away from July 1, leaving plenty of time to iron out a new deal, it sounds like the Leafs have pitched a three-year deal worth less than $4 million per season.

Stay tuned to this one as things could get very, very interesting in the coming days.
