The Toronto Maple Leafs are working on sending forward Matthew Knies down to the AHL Marlies in a paper transaction today to preserve some flexibility down the stretch, if needed.

This is coming from a report by Chris Johnston on the craziest day of the NHL season, Deadline Day. However, this demotion is simply a paper transaction.

The Maple Leafs acquire depth forward Connor Dewar from the Minnesota Wild in the last minutes of the deadline on Friday.

When meeting with reporters, general manager Brad Treliving assured everyone that Knies was doing well and was even expected to be in the lineup for the Maple Leafs against the Montreal Canadiens this weekend.

On Thursday against the Boston Bruins, Knies suffered the injury after colliding with Brad Marchand midway through the first period and did not play the rest of the period, nor did he return for the second.

Knies has had a solid rookie season for the Maple Leafs with 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points in 61 games this season.
