The criticism came fast after details of the massive agreement emerged.
The Toronto Maple Leafs made headlines Friday morning when they acquired defenseman Darren Raddysh in a blockbuster sign-and-trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
But while the move may have excited some fans, a large portion of Leafs Nation appears far less convinced.
Almost immediately after details of Raddysh’s new contract emerged, social media exploded with criticism. The veteran defenseman reportedly signed an eight-year deal carrying an annual cap hit of $8.5 million, a dramatic increase from the $975,000 cap hit he played under this past season.
According to PuckPedia, the jump represents the third-largest increase in cap hit from one standard NHL contract to another in league history.
That statistic alone was enough to send shockwaves through Toronto’s fanbase.
Many supporters focused less on Raddysh’s breakout 70-point season and more on his age. The defenseman recently turned 30, meaning the Maple Leafs will be committed to the contract until he is 38 years old.
For a fanbase that has witnessed its fair share of questionable long-term deals over the years, the parallels were impossible to ignore.
“This contract feels like David Clarkson’s to me,” one fan wrote.
Another added: “Close enough, welcome back Brian Burke era Leafs.”
Others questioned whether new general manager John Chayka may have overpaid in an effort to make an immediate splash during his first offseason running the club.
“Such a desperate move for a new GM,” another fan posted.
Of course, not everyone is ready to declare the deal a disaster. Raddysh is coming off the best season of his career, posting 22 goals and 70 points while averaging nearly 23 minutes per game for the Lightning. Toronto clearly believes those numbers are sustainable and that the right-shot defenseman can become a cornerstone of its blue line moving forward.
Still, the contract will inevitably face scrutiny for years to come. When asked, GM Chayka revealed Raddysh did get some form of trade protection, but didn’t disclose specifics.
The combination of Raddysh’s age, the length of the deal, and the enormous raise has created the perfect recipe for debate across the hockey world.
For now, Leafs fans are left hoping that the outrage flooding social media ages far worse than the contract itself.
