6 Maple Leaf hopefuls get the bad news on Saturday.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have trimmed down their training camp roster, doing so significantly on Saturday.
In an official announcement through their department of public relations, the Leafs have announced that a total of 6 players are being taken off of the training camp roster and will instead be headed back to their respective junior teams. The players in question are the following:
Defensemen:
Rylan Fellinger
Nathan Mayes
Forwards:
Tyler Hopkins
Harry Nansi
Matthew Hlacar
Sam McCue
Fellinger, a Maple Leafs 6th round pick (185th overall) at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, will be headed back to the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League for what will be his third season with that franchise.
Mayes, a Maple Leafs 7th round pick (225th overall) from the 2024 NHL Entry Draft is headed back to the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League for what will be his 5th consecutive season with that franchise.
Hopkins, a Maple Leafs 3rd round pick (86th overall) at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft will be returning to the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL where he will begin his 3rd season with the team.
Nansi, a Maple Leafs 5th round pick (153rd overall) at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft is headed back to the Owen Sound Attack of the OHL for his third season.
Hlacar, a Maple Leafs 7th round pick (217th overall) at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft is headed back to the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL for what will be only his second season with that team.
Last but not least McCue, a Maple Leafs 7th round pick (216th overall) at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft will be headed back to the Flint Firebirds for his second season with that team.
All of these players are either 19 years of age or younger so today's moves come as no surprise to anyone, but nonetheless it is a difficult day for a group of young men who were no doubt hoping for more of a chance to shine during training camp.
