A familiar name has resurfaced as Toronto continues searching for defensive help, with a new development putting a once-discussed deal back in the spotlight.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made no secret of their desire to bolster the blue line. That pursuit has been ongoing since the summer, and now a familiar name appears to be back in the conversation.
According to Stefen Rosner, the Leafs inquired about New York Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield last season, and the two sides have reportedly remained in contact since. The connection is notable given Mayfield's current standing with the Islanders, where he has been a healthy scratch for several games this season.
This points to his diminished role on Long Island and has intensified trade chatter.
The 31-year-old carries a full no-trade clause, which means any potential deal would require his approval. That detail could complicate matters, but Toronto's apparent continued engagement suggests there may be mutual interest in making something work.
It’s been reported that the Leafs have been actively searching for upgrades on the back end for months. The level of league-wide attention on Toronto was evident at the San Jose Sharks vs. Leafs game on October 19, when 18 different NHL teams had scouts or representatives in the building. Among them were Detroit, Edmonton, Florida, Colorado, the Rangers, and Dallas, among others.
That kind of scouting presence suggests Toronto could be involved in broader trade discussions beyond the Mayfield connection.
There is also a coaching link worth noting. Toronto head coach Jim Hiller and assistant coach John Gruden both previously served on Barry Trotz's staff with the Islanders, giving them firsthand familiarity with Mayfield's game and what he could bring to the Leafs' defensive corps.
Mayfield is a physical, right-shot defenseman who has been a dependable presence in the NHL for years. His experience and style of play would fit the profile of what Toronto has reportedly been seeking.
No deal has been confirmed at this stage, and the full no-trade clause remains a significant hurdle. But with Mayfield sitting out regularly and the Leafs clearly in the market, the pieces appear to be aligning for a potential transaction.
