The Toronto Maple Leafs have confirmed the bad news with a pair of goaltending moves in the early hours of Saturday morning.

On Saturday, the Leafs officially announced that goaltender Joseph Woll was being placed on injured reserve with the move being made retroactive to December 4th. A designation of injured reserve means a player must miss at least 7 days of action, although that player is allowed to continue to participate in team activities outside of games like practice for example.

This is a terrible break for the Maple Leafs who are currently without the services of goaltender Anthony Stolarz, leaving the Maple Leafs with very few options to turn to. That much was evident with the Maple Leafs next move on Saturday.

The Maple Leafs have officially announced that they are calling up goaltender Artur Akhtyamov from the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies, with this potentially opening the door to a National Hockey League debut for Akhtyamov.

Akhtyamov has appeared in 12 game's for the AHL's Toronto Marlies this season recording a 3.04 goals against average and a .896 save percentage.

The Leafs will of course look to rely heavily on goaltender Dennis Hildeby while Woll and Stolarz are sidelined with injuries, but hopefully they have learned some lessons from this seasons injuries. The Leafs leaned heavily on Stolarz early in the season when Woll was injured and did the same thing when the positions were reversed, something that many believe may have contributed to both goaltenders currently being injured.
