There are rumours around the league, reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, that the Arizona Coyotes are shopping defenseman Jakob Chychrun. And the Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly want in. According to Nick Kypreos, GM Kyle Dubas is reportedly in the mix and the Maple Leafs could become a contender to land the blue liner.
“Well, and I can tell you the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of them. JB, to your point that this is a defenseman that players 25 minutes a night. This is a defensemen going into this season. I think that has scored 30 goals in the last two years. This season, obviously is a write off when you look at their team and what’s happened to them and maybe where he is statistically, JB, you hit it right on the nail on why this guy is so attractive. 23 years of age, $4.6 million for three more years.”
However, during the Jeff Marek Show, Friedman made it clear that the asking price is “massive”, though it is not scaring off interested parties because of the overall circumstances involving Chychrun’s affordable contract and the Coyotes rebuilding process.
Kypreos believes the return for Chychrun would be similar to the one the Buffalo Sabres received in the Jack Eichel trade.
“Jack was Tuch, Krebs, a first round, a first and a second if I’m not mistaken. So there’s four pieces. That’s what Arizona would be looking at to move Jakob Chychrun.”
That’s a lot for the Maple Leafs, it all depends if Dubas sees this group with the addition of Chychrun making it all the way to the Stanley Cup.
But Chychrun is getting a lot of interest. Friedman believes Chychrun could help address the Oilers’ need for a left-shot defenseman and become a target for in Edmonton. And so we could have a good ole Canadian battle on the trade market.
