The Toronto Maple Leafs may be making a rather unexpected addition to their roster this season.

On Monday morning, National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger linked former NHL forward Dillon Dube to the Maple Leafs when he was asked to comment on where some of the players involved in the Hockey Canada scandal could land this season. Dreger stated his belief that Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is likely to at least make an attempt at bringing Dube to the Leafs.

"I wouldn't be at all surprised if Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs put their hat in the ring and took a decent swing at Dillon Dube," revealed Dreger on TSN 1050.

There have been reports that the players involved in the scandal would prefer to sign contracts with teams in the United States of America, an understandable desire given the high profile scandal they went through in their home country of Canada, but Dreger points to a level of familiarity between Dube and Maple Leafs management as an important factor here.

"There's history there of course that goes back to the Calgary days between Dube and Brad Treliving," added Dreger.

Dreger made it clear that he was by no means suggesting the Maple Leafs were the favorite here, clarifying that he only expects the Leafs to make the attempt at acquiring the free agent forward.

"Doesn't mean that Toronto is a front runner, doesn't mean that the Maple Leafs are going to land Dillon Dube," stressed Dreger.

Dreger does however point to a clear need for a top six forward in Toronto and appears to believe that Dube could be a good fit in that regard.

"I mentioned earlier that there is a want for a top-six forward and the assumption is that a player like that could come in and fill that hole," said Dreger in conclusion.
