The Leafs are gaining momentum.
The Florida Panthers dynasty era may be losing one of its foundational pillars, and the Toronto Maple Leafs appear increasingly positioned to be the beneficiary.
Sergei Bobrovsky, who arrived in Florida back in 2019 when the Panthers were a perennial playoff miss, helped transform the franchise into a back-to-back Stanley Cup champion. But with his $70 million contract expiring and Florida's cap space squeezed tight following the Brady Tkachuk acquisition, the two-time Vezina Trophy winner is widely expected to hit the open market.
According to Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos, speaking on Real Kyper & Bourne, the speculation linking Bobrovsky to Toronto is not going away anytime soon. Kypreos suggested that if the 37-year-old netminder cannot land the five or six-year deal he reportedly desires elsewhere, the Leafs could offer a four-year term to bring him north. He speculated the contract could carry an average annual value in the range of $7 million to $8 million.
That figure would represent a significant investment in a goaltender coming off the worst statistical season of his 16-year career. Bobrovsky posted a 3.07 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage in 52 appearances this past season, a notable decline from the numbers he put up during Florida's championship runs.
Still, the Toronto connection makes sense on paper. Elliotte Friedman noted on a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast that Bobrovsky could reunite with Anthony Stolarz, who backed him up during the Panthers' first Cup win in 2024. Friedman also pointed to Bobrovsky's close relationship with Leafs forward Steven Lorentz from their shared time in Florida.
Darren Dreger also confirmed that rumours that Toronto could jump at the opportunity of signing Bobrovsky if he goes unsigned in Florida.
Meanwhile, the Panthers may already be looking at their post-Bobrovsky future. According to Chris Johnston on the Chris Johnston Show, Florida should not be ruled out in the pursuit of Connor Hellebuyck, a move that would signal they have moved on from their longtime starter. However, a division rival, the Carolina Hurricanes, have recently made a strong pitch to land the Jets’ star goalie.
For now, with free agency just days away and the Draft later tonight, the Leafs could become one of the frontrunners if Bobrovsky does leave Florida, and the contract framework Kypreos outlined could be the formula that makes it happen.
