The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost one of their goaltenders.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Chris Johnston, veteran backup goaltender Cayden Primeau is no longer a member of the Maple Leafs after being claimed off of waivers today by Eastern Conference rivals the Carolina Hurricanes.

The news should come as relatively little surprise to those who have followed Primeau's trajectory this season, with the backup netminder initially being claimed off of waivers by the Maple Leafs earlier in the season.

The Leafs submitted a claim for Primeau, a move that was spurred on by the sudden and unexpected leave of absence from Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll, after he was previously waived by the Carolina Hurricanes when they were making room on their own roster at the start of the 2025-26 NHL regular season. Woll however recently re-joined the Maple Leafs which in turn left them with the task of making room on their own roster, a move that the Hurricanes were quick to take advantage of.

Although the Leafs do lose Primeau for nothing here I don't think they will mind given that he was only waived due to the return of Joseph Woll. There's no question about which goaltender the Maple Leafs would rather have on a night to night basis if we're comparing Primeau and Woll, not to mention the fact that the claim from the Hurricanes seems very fair in light of the fact that Primeau was claimed by the Leafs earlier this season in the exact same manner.

Pimeau's tenure with the Maple Leafs ends at just 3 games and with less than stellar results, a 4.30 goals against average and a .838 save percentage.
