The Oilers are going after the “most valuable trade chip” in Toronto. But there is one huge issue.
Despite the Maple Leafs’ win over the Oilers in Edmonton on Tuesday night, days before the Olympic break, all eyes are on Toronto’s roster as the March 6 trade deadline approaches. Elliotte Friedman recently noted that forward Bobby McMann could be “the most valuable trade chip” the Maple Leafs have, generating significant interest around the NHL.
The Oilers, having seen McMann in action firsthand, are reportedly among the teams keeping a close watch on him for a potential trade. His combination of size, speed, relentless forechecking, and scoring ability makes him an ideal addition for a playoff-bound Edmonton team looking to bolster the lineup around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
In terms of return, Elliotte Friedman recently shared what he found out about McMann’s value on the market. The Leafs are looking to maximize his value, expecting a huge haul for the forward that includes a first-round pick.
“I think they’re asking for a 1st rounder for Bobby McMann; now do you get it, I don’t know,” dropped Friedman.
The insider added, in his latest 32 Thoughts column on Sportsnet, that several interested suitors, including the Oilers, cannot match that asking price.
“One challenge for 2026: Colorado, Dallas, Edmonton, Minnesota and Vegas have already traded their first-rounders. (Carolina dealt theirs, but got another one from Dallas.)”
While it’s certainly not guaranteed the team gets a first-rounder but Edmonton has seen how impactful McMann can be and might have to pull that trigger to get him during captain Connor McDavid’s championship window.
For Toronto, moving McMann could provide roster flexibility and create space ahead of next season, while also allowing the team to capitalize on strong trade market interest. For Edmonton, acquiring a forward like McMann would strengthen their depth and bring an additional edge to a team aiming for a deep postseason run.
As trade chatter intensifies, McMann’s name is expected to remain near the top of NHL front offices’ wish lists, making him one of the most intriguing pieces to watch in the coming weeks.
