The Toronto Maple Leafs have called up Martin Jones on an emergency basis before the team’s morning skate on Wednesday ahead of their game against the Senators in Ottawa on Thursday night.
According to the Maple Leafs, netminder Ilya Samsonov is too weakened from flu bug to back up Joseph Woll in Ottawa. Woll has a .949 save percentage in his last two starts in goal. He is 8-5-0 this season with a .917 save percentage.
The Maple Leafs signed Jones to a one-year, $875,000 back in August as the team’s third goaltending option after the veteran netminder spent the 2022-23 NHL season with the Seattle Kraken. During that season, he posted an .887 save percentage in 48 contests with the club.
In five games with the Toronto Marlies this year, Jones is 2-1-1 with an .870 save percentage. He has yet to play for the Maple Leafs this season.
Jones is likely to be Woll's backup on Thursday against the Senators.
