The Toronto Maple Leafs have made it official.
On Sunday, the Maple Leafs revealed what many have suspected for weeks now when they announced that both John Chayka and Mats Sundin would be joining the Maple Leafs front office.
Not only will they be joining that front office but both men will in fact serve in full time leadership roles with John Chayka being appointed general manager while Mats Sundin has been appointed Senior Executive Advisor, Hockey Operations.
The moves are both considered relatively controversial, albeit for different reasons, and there's no question that both men will be heavily scrutinized in their new roles.
Chayka's only other tenure as general manager in the NHL was with the Arizona Coyotes and it ended in considerable controversy with Chayka reportedly seeking opportunities with other teams while still under contract with the Coyotes. Chayka was also involved in another controversy, one in which the Coyotes improperly tested prospects during the scouting combine, resulting in the Coyotes losing both a first and second round pick under his watch.
Chayka was even suspended by the NHL as a result of his actions and this will be his first role in the league following that suspension.
Sundin on the other hand has never held a managerial position in a National Hockey League front office and instead has been chosen for his legacy connection to the Maple Leafs as one of the greatest players to ever wear a Maple Leafs jersey.
Unlike his predecessor in Brendan Shanahan, Sundin has also not held any role within the NHL since retiring as a player and will be taking on his first prominent role in the NHL post-retirement.
