It's an unfortunate step that's required for him to get back into action, but a necessary step nonetheless.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenseman Carl Dahlström, who has missed this entire season so far after undergoing shoulder surgery, on waivers. The news was first reported by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.
The Swedish blue liner was initially injured on September 28 during a preseason matchup against the Original 6 rival Montreal Canadiens after he was cross-checked by Montreal's Rem Pitlick in the first period. It wouldn't be long before it was announced that he would need surgery, keeping him out of the lineup for the next several months.
Dahlström has appeared in 67 career NHL contests with the Chicago Blackhawks, Winnipeg Jets and Leafs, registering 12 assists.
He'll need to pass through the waiver wire in order to be assigned to the American Hockey League affiliate Toronto Marlies.
