John Chayka's dramatic overhaul of Toronto's roster is definitely underway.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are not wasting any time reshaping their roster. In a move that caught many around the league off guard, the Maple Leafs have acquired defenseman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a sign-and-trade agreement completed very early Friday morning.
As part of the deal, Raddysh will immediately sign a massive eight-year contract carrying an average annual value north of $8 million. Toronto sent back a fifth round pick in this summer' draft for the rights to Darren Raddysh in return.
The Maple Leafs confirmed the monster transaction around 8h30ETam on Friday, while Pierre LeBrun reports that Raddysh's annual value in Toronto is $8.5M. Only Auston Matthews and William Nylander will earn more.
The contract represents a huge raise for the 30-year-old blue liner, who just completed a two-year deal worth $1.95 million total. Toronto is clearly betting that Raddysh's breakout campaign was no fluke.
The veteran defenseman enjoyed the best season of his career in 2025-26, recording 22 goals and 70 points in just 73 games while averaging 22:42 of ice time per night. He continued to play a major role in the playoffs, averaging more than 26 minutes per game for the Lightning during their first-round series.
The acquisition is the latest sign that new Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka is aggressively putting his stamp on the franchise.
Earlier this week, Chayka completed another significant trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, acquiring defenseman Emil Andrae, goaltender Samuel Ersson, and a third-round pick in exchange for Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit.
Now, with Raddysh in the fold on a long-term deal, attention will immediately shift to what comes next.
It has recently been reported that Morgan Rielly is increasingly viewed as a trade candidate this offseason. Jake McCabe could also be on the move, according to some rumours.
Whether Raddysh ultimately replaces one of those veterans remains to be seen, but one thing is becoming crystal clear: the Maple Leafs' blue line could look dramatically different by the time training camp opens.
