The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired a new defenseman, one that comes from an amateur program affiliated with a rival team in the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference.

According to a report from Columbus Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline, the Maple Leafs have signed 20 year old undrafted defenseman Hayes Hundley to a 3 year entry level contract following a successful season from Hundley with the University of St. Thomas.

Hundley is a large man who continues to fill out his frame with Portzline reporting that the young defenseman now stands at 6'3 and tips the scales at 210lbs. Hundley came up through the Ohio Blue Jackets AAA program, a program that is directly affiliated with the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets.

The program has produced a number of players that have gone on to become NHL players in recent years, with the likes of Connor Murphy, Sean Kuraly, Jack Roslovic, Kiefer Sherwood and more all former members of the Ohio Blue Jackets AAA program.

In his first season with St. Thomas, Hundley appeared in 38 games and scored 6 goals and added 6 assists for 12 total points on the season. He had 12 penalty minutes to his name and finished the season with a plus minus rating of +10.

The Maple Leafs depth on the blue line was sorely tested this season and adding another young prospect to shore up that depth certainly can't hurt moving forward. Only time will tell if Hundley becomes another NHL success story for the Ohio Blue Jackets.
