Maple Leafs netminder was transported to hospital on Saturday night.
In many ways it has felt like a season where everything has gone wrong for the Toronto Maple Leafs and on Saturday we were treated to yet another example of that in somewhat of an unbelievable fashion.
The Maple Leafs were set to face off against the Ottawa Senators in the latest iteration of the Battle of Ontario, but prior to the game ever getting underway the Maple Leafs would lose their starting netminder to injury. During warmups, Maple Leafs star forward William Nylander would strike Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz directly in the throat with a hard shot that took Stolarz out of the game before it even started.
The Maple Leafs subsequently announced that Stolarz was being transported to hospital for precautionary reasons, adding to the concern around the netminder, but an early update from the Maple Leafs suggests that Stolarz is going to be relatively ok following the incident.
The Maple Leafs have officially confirmed that Stolarz was released from hospital last night and was able to travel with the team back to Toronto. The Maple Leafs won't play until Tuesday when they welcome the Boston Bruins to Toronto, and thus far there has been no word on whether or not Stolarz will be available for that game.
If Stolarz does indeed miss time as a result of this injury it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the team given that the Stanley Cup playoffs appear well out of reach for the Maple Leafs at this stage of the season.
The big concern here for Stolarz is that he previously missed significant time due to a nerve injury in his neck earlier this season. That being said hopefully this is an indication that Stolarz has avoided the worst of it.
