Maple Leafs “should not budge” when it comes to re-signing William Nylander!

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a complex decision regarding William Nylander’s contract situation. The Finnish forward is reportedly looking for a new contract north of $10M in Toronto, however, it is obvious that the Maple Leafs can’t afford to sign another double-figure deal. The focus in Toronto is also on Auston Matthews, and then Mitch Marner next summer.
Nylander is entering the final year of his current contract, and he’d like to earn what he sees as fair compensation for his services with his next deal. However, new Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has already used up what was left of his team’s salary cap space with the new contracts for Tyler Bertuzzi, Ryan Reaves and Max Domi. And the Leafs need to figure out how to extend Matthews so all the puzzle pieces fit.
If you have TSN’s Bryan Hayes, the Maple Leafs should not budge when it comes to their negotiations with Nylander.
“If William Nylander is dead set on getting $10 million plus, and the Leafs are not willing to go there, they should not budge.”
He adds: “[The Maple Leafs] have to set a number, and if [William Nylander] doesn’t like it, so be it.”
Nylander has one more season remaining on his contract that carries an annual average value of $6,962,366. In 521 career NHL games, all with the Leafs, he’s scored 177 goals (including having scored a career high 40 last season) and 253 assists for 430 career points.
Chatter of potential trades have emerged though I have to assume it would come as a last resort, probably before losing Nylander on the free agent market for nothing next summer, if the Maple Leafs move him.
