New report suggests a long-time forward is preparing to walk away as his quiet exit plan is leaked.
A new report out of Sweden appears to confirm that Toronto Maple Leafs forward Calle Järnkrok is preparing to leave the organization, a move that could effectively mark the end of his NHL career.
For months, the Maple Leafs have been under pressure to retool their forward group following another disappointing playoff exit. General manager Brad Treliving has already taken steps to reshape the roster, including buying out the remainder of David Kämpf’s contract earlier this season. The buyout cleared a roster spot and freed up an additional $1.25 million in cap space, with $1.15 million of Kämpf’s hit buried in the AHL. But while the Leafs successfully moved on from Kämpf, they have been unable to find a trade partner for Järnkrok.
The 34-year-old carries a modest $2.1 million cap hit and remains a capable bottom-six option when healthy, the type of player teams usually line up to acquire at the deadline. Yet, according to reports, clubs have been hesitant due to his injury history and uncertain future.
That future may now be clearer.
According to reporting from Abrahamsson and further confirmed by Swedish outlet Expressen, Järnkrok has verbally agreed to join Brynäs IF of the SHL for the 2026-27 season, effectively returning to the team where his pro career began. The move is expected to take place at the conclusion of the current NHL season.
If accurate, this would almost certainly bring Järnkrok’s NHL career to a close.
For the Maple Leafs, the situation creates an awkward dilemma. Järnkrok is still contributing as the club pushes for a Stanley Cup run, yet he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and now appears to have his European plans locked in.
With that in mind, Toronto may have to consider whether it makes sense to trade him before the deadline, especially if he is already committed to leaving.
As the Leafs continue to navigate a crowded forward group, this new development adds another layer to the decisions Treliving must make in the coming months.
