The Toronto Maple Leafs may be looking to bring in a familiar face for star forward Auston Matthews.

Things have been relatively quiet on the free agent front thus far with most of the big name pending unrestricted free agents that were set to hit the open market this summer re-signing with their teams just before free agency officially got underway. Some names however have hit the open market and it now sounds like the Maple Leafs are looking to bring one of those players into the fold.

On Sunday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Maple Leafs were looking to bring in one of Matthews' former teammates.

"One other guy I think the Leafs are in on is Jack Roslovic," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "It makes sense to me because he has a history with Auston Matthews, they played together on the US National Development Team."

Interestingly enough Friedman hinted at the fact that there may already be some type of agreement in place between Roslovic and the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to the insider, one of the reasons the Leafs failed to land forward Andrew Mangiapane was due to the fact that Leafs general manager Brad Treliving wanted to move bodies off of his roster first. Mangiapane was unwilling to wait, but the same does not appear to be true of Roslovic.

"I'm curious to see if that happens," said Friedman. "So far it looks like, at least for now, Roslovic is waiting."

Roslovic is coming off of a solid season with the Carolina Hurricanes, one in which he had 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 points over 81 games this past season. He is without a doubt the best forward still unsigned on the free agent market this offseason so the idea of him having some kind of handshake agreement with the Maple Leafs would make sense.

Roslovic is coming off of a 1 year deal at a cap hit of just $2.8 million, but AFP Analytics has him projected to earn a significant raise with a 3 year deal coming in at just over $4 million per season in terms of average annual value and cap hit. It is unclear if the Maple Leafs will give up that much money and term if they do indeed sign Roslovic in the end.
