This one will be a tough pill to swallow for fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On Saturday, Day 2 of the National Hockey League Entry Draft, the Maple Leafs officially announced that they had traded defenseman Brandon Carlo to the St. Louis Blues. Now that part will likely go over well given that Carlo had become a Lightning rod of controversy since joining the Leafs, what won't go over so well is the return.

Coming back the other way for the Maple Leafs was only a pair of third round picks (73rd and 76th overall) in this year's NHL draft, an extremely meager return when compared to what the Leafs gave up to acquire Carlo in the first place.

It was just a little over a year ago that the Leafs acquired Carlo in a trade with one of their most bitter divisional rivals, the Boston Bruins. In that deal now former Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving gave up not only a first round pick, but former Maple Leafs second round pick Fraser Minten as well.

Minten has since gone on to look like a very good young centerman for the Bruins, something the Maple Leafs themselves could certainly use, putting up 17 goals and 18 assists for 35 points in 82 games this past season.

We won't know what the Bruins will do with that first round pick for some time to come, but it's hard to imagine the Maple Leafs getting more value out of their two new third round picks than what they gave up for what was a failed experiment with Brandon Carlo.
