This may very well end up being the feel good story of the summer, and an entirely unexpected one at that.

Veteran National Hockey League goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury is officially coming out of retirement after news broke this week that the beloved netminder would be returning to where it all began for him in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins announced on Friday that Fleury, who was originally selected by the Penguins in the first round (1st overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, would be making his return to his first team after agreeing to a professional tryout offer (PTO) with the Penguins.

Fleury was a beloved figure in the Pittsburgh market and has remained a fan favorite in that city despite the fact that he last played as a member of the Penguins during the 2016-17 NHL season, winning a Stanley Cup at the culmination of that season.

Fleury would subsequently end up playing for the Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild over the course of the last 8 NHL seasons.

Fleury had previously announced that last season would be his final season in the NHL but this latest development seems to leave open the possibility that Fleury will play one more season with his beloved former team before officially hanging up his skates for good.

It is important to note that Fleury is not signed to an NHL contract at this time but will be allowed to participate in both training camp and the preseason with the Penguins after agreeing to a PTO. Whether or not the Penguins, or even Fleury himself, will choose to sign an NHL contract after the PTO remains to be seen.

As I mentioned this announcement came as a major shock to most hockey fans, but some keen eyed observers may have seen this one coming ahead of time. Fleury's agent, Alan Walsh, hinted at the signing this past Thursday when he retweeted a photo of Fleury in a Penguins jersey and alluded to the possibility of some news on the horizon related to that photo.

Even if this does only result in Fleury appearing for the Penguins during the preseason, I have no doubt that fans in Pittsburgh will be overjoyed at the chance to give Fleury a final send off in a Penguins jersey. Those fans won't be alone however, as I have no doubt that many of Fleury's former Penguins teammates will be just as happy to see the beloved former goaltender wearing the black and yellow of the Penguins one final time.
