The veteran goalie opens up about multiple teams reaching out in recent months.
Beloved goalie Marc-Andre Fleury retired at the end of last season, but has received offers in recent months from teams hoping to entice him back into the game. On Monday evening, on the air of JiC on TVA Sports in a French interview, Fleury did admit that sometimes he found it hard to say no.
“Even just one call is more than I expected. It’s not always easy to say no,” he said on Monday.
Fleury was however cautious when asked about which teams had contacted his agent, Allan Walsh.
“I’d rather not answer that question. Out of respect for the teams and their goalies,” he simply replied.
That said, there were certain calls that, let’s say, piqued his interest.
“Honestly, I toyed with the idea a little,” he admitted. “I miss it. I’d be lying if I said everything about retirement is easy and perfect. The feeling of playing hockey, being part of a team, having a shared goal, winning games—that’s not something you find in everyday life. Of course I miss that a lot, and it made me think.”
That, and the chance to stay close to the family that has been with him through it all.
Fleury took part in a total og 1,051 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights, Chicago Blackhawks and Minnesota Wild, he won three Stanley Cups, and had a career that’s all but guaranteed to land him in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The guy deserves a break.
