Two NHL teams shake up their front office on Saturday night.
A significant shift has taken place in the National Hockey League, with the front offices of two NHL teams seeing a shake up. According to a report from NHL insider David Pagnotta, former NHL general manager Marc Bergevin is leaving his position with the Los Angeles Kings where he currently serves as senior advisor to general manager Ken Holland and will instead be joining the front office of the Buffalo Sabres.
Again according to Pagnotta, it appears that Bergevin will take the position of associate general manager under newly appointed Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen.
Bergevin brings with him a rare combination of experience as both a player and a front office executive. Over an NHL career that saw him play for the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders, Hartford Whalers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins and Vancouver Canucks, Bergevin, a defenseman, appeared in 1191 NHL games, scoring 26 goals and adding 145 assists for 181 career points.
Following his career as a player, Bergevin would work his way up the ranks of the Blackhawks organization, serving first as a scout before being named director of player personnel and eventually assistant general manager. That would earn Bergevin his first chance as an NHL general manager which would come with the Montreal Canadiens in 2012, a position he would hold until he was fired by the Canadiens in November of 2021.
Bergevin was hired by the Kings just a few short months after his departure from the Canadiens, and had remained in that role until today's announcement.
