Marco Rossi has finally signed a new contract.
The Minnesota Wild have finally reached a deal with restricted free agent Marco Rossi.
After what looked like a contentious standoff between Rossi and the Wild, at least from the outside looking in, the two sides came to an agreement on Friday to move forward on what looks very much like a bridge-type of deal.
According to Wild insider Michael Russo, Rossi has agreed to a 3 year deal that will carry an average annual value of $5 million per season. The way the deal is structured is of great importance however, with Rossi earning $4 million in Year 1, $5 million in Year 2, and $6 million in Year 3. This means that the Wild would need to put forward a qualifying offer of $6 million at the end of this deal to retain Rossi, who will still be a restricted free agent when this contract expires.
Rossi is coming off of an excellent season in which he recorded 24 goals and 36 assists for a total of 60 points in 82 regular season games with the Wild. Rossi was however very limited in the playoffs, with the Wild clearly not having full faith in their player, and was limited to just 2 goals and 1 assist over 6 playoff games.
While a deal did get signed today, I suspect that the relationship between the two parties involved in this negotiation may have to continue down a bumpy road moving forward.
