The Boston Bruins lost one of the core pieces of their lineup over the weekend when they faced off against the Montreal Canadiens. Veteran defenseman Charlie McAvoy suffered an ugly looking injury when a one-timer from the blue line, courtesy of Canadiens defenseman Noah Dobson, struck McAvoy hard in the unprotected part of his face.

Unfortunately for McAvoy the puck would manage to find its way under his visor, appearing to strike him in the lower part of his jaw. McAvoy would need several moments before he was able to rise to his feet again and skate away under his own power, but there's no telling how much damage that puck may have done.

Here's a look at the replay:

On Monday morning we received our first official update on the status of the Bruins star defenseman courtesy of head coach Marc Sturm. Sturm did not provide a great deal of information as it pertains to how long McAvoy will be out, only revealing to no one's surprise that McAvoy would miss tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes, but he did reveal that McAvoy was meeting with team doctors today.

"He's with the doctors right now," revealed Sturm on Monday morning. "So there's no timeline, obviously he's going to be out tonight. We'll see how it goes today."

The loss of McAvoy for any extended period of time would be a huge blow to the Bruins with McAvoy not only being an incredibly talented defenseman for the Bruins, but one that was eating up just under 24 minutes of ice time per game on average this season. McAvoy was also off to a solid start in terms of his offensive production this season with 14 points, all assists, through just 19 regular season games.
