Brutally honest comments from the Bruins head coach.
Boston Bruins head coach Marco Sturm is clearly trying to light a fire under Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei.
Sturm has made the decision to leave Lohrei out of the lineup for several games in a row and on Saturday he did so again, making Lohrei a healthy scratch for the third straight game, in what appears to be an attempt to get his message across to the player.
Sturm was asked about the possibility that his decisions would rub Lohrei the wrong way and, without missing a beat, Sturm informed reporters that he was hoping his decisions to scratch Lohrei would do just that.
"Yeah he should be pissed," admitted Sturm. "He should be very pissed, he should be upset."
Sturm would continue by praising Lohrei for his hard work and effort to get back into the Bruins lineup, but also admitted that it is very much his intention to get a different version of the player on the ice when he allows him to reenter the Bruins lineup.
"He works hard at practice, he's ready," admitted Sturm. "He just waits for his opportunity but that's the goal, by having him out there and be a little bit different when he comes back."
Lohrei has appeared in 11 games for the Bruins this season, the first 11 games of the season in fact, and had 1 goal and 5 assists prior to being taken out of the lineup by Sturm. It will be very interesting to see if he responds in the manner that Sturm is obviously hoping for in this scenario.
